Skip navigation to main content.With research emphases in areas such as smart structures, electronics packaging, energy and environmental engineering and manufacturing, the Department of Mechanical Engineering conducts research and provides education to meet the current and emerging needs of society. Today's mechanical engineers use cutting-edge computing, smart sensors and electronic technology to design and manufacture automated products for the future.
Currently, the Department has 44 active faculty, of whom 13 are Fellows of professional societies and five are members of the National Academy of Engineering. During the last five years the Department has implemented new programs in manufacturing, energy, electronics, and smart materials that address critical issues for changing national needs. They have also implemented important curricular changes to prepare better engineers for the challenges of the 21st century. Concurrently, they have established a successful record of integrating education, leading-edge research, and collaboration with industrial partners.
